I have chosen this article to be my media project this week for many different reasons. This week's play, Trifles, is centered around feminist theater and the discussion of feminism and gender loyalty. Yesterday (Friday, January 20th 2018) I walked into class with my earbuds in while I watched a 3 hour long video. The video I was watching was all the testimonies of the 140 victims in the USA Gymnastics Olympic Doctor sexual assault trial of Larry Nassar. I was compelled to watch the entire video. I was glued to the screen of my phone as each woman and child got up to speak directly to Larry about his abuse towards them. Though the topic is so uncomfortable and so upsetting I found the video unparalleled in importance. Women need to watch it because it gives a sense of validation to their struggles in a overtly patriarchal society. All women face a sense of sexism, sexual abuse, separation, gender elitism, and so much more. Whether this is because the glass ceiling is real for them and Bob who's cubicle is right next to Sally's gets paid $1 to every $.75 Sally makes. Whether this is because Jenny who goes out to the Brewery with her Boyfriend Matt Friday night and meets another couple to only have the man in the group talk over her, ignore her questions, and only address her boyfriend. Whether this is because Alice, who has been making her husband dinner every night for 25 years, darned his socks, raised his kids, cleaned the house all to find out that he has been having an affair and is leaving her for his secretary, cannot find a job because she has been "unemployed" for 25 years. Whether this is because Amber feels uncomfortable with the way her older cousins best friend looks at her but she is afraid to say anything. These experiences happen daily. It is not normal. It has been conditioned to feel normal. Men need to watch this video to understand what it is women face. Men need to understand they are perpetrators of this hidden violence and sexism by staying silence whether they realize it or not. They need to understand they have a voice to help stop it when most women have had their voice stolen from them as soon as they were born. I have chosen this article because it contains a real life current situation that showcases a woman's courage. It is vital that our society changes for the better to be encompassing of not only this particular minority but of all the minorities. How can we truly call ourselves a diverse society when we condition ourselves to organize ourselves on a totem pole?
